Transcrpition from the session
Hello, everyone, and thanks for joining our 2025 summit creating a connected campus. I'd like to welcome everyone today, introduce a little bit about Concept3D, and tell you a little bit about what you can expect this week.
First, let me tell you about the team that I'm so proud to manage. We have 65 full-time employees today. We're across 15 states and 4 time zones. We have folks who have been with the company, believe it or not, 17 years. We have brand new folks to the team—some people that have been here just a month.
One of the most interesting things about Concept3D is that this team is supportive like no other team you've seen before, whether it's being focused on our customers or focused on each other. One piece of evidence of that is our most active Slack channel by far: the High Fives Channel.
That's a place where people can give each other a shoutout, recognize collaboration, recognize great work, be supportive, and act like a team. Not a day goes by where you don't scroll and see a tremendous amount of activity in the High Fives Channel, and it varies so much. I’m proud to share this group with you. They're a team of builders, innovators, go-getters, and they live and breathe higher ed every day.
On a little less serious side about our team—we include a lot of pets. A close runner-up for most active Slack channel is the Pets Channel. Especially in this time when we're all working remotely, you find that having somebody to work by your side is super helpful. So this is a glance at the Concept3D pets. We have one employee, believe it or not, that has 11 pets, including dogs, 4 lizards, 4 guinea pigs, and not even included in that total is a ton of goldfish that live in his front yard when the weather is warm enough.
Our most exotic pet is probably the lizard you see in the lower left. And we even have a somewhat famous Instagram dog: Tuna the water dog. That’s our crew. The youngest member of the crew is about 6 months old.
You’ll see my dog in the lower left. Quick story—he and I love exploring Colorado in the winter and getting outside. His name is Bert, named after one of the grandfathers of snowboarding, Jake Burton. He and I spent a ton of time exploring the trails in Colorado this winter—hiking, snow biking, and even a little bit of snowshoeing.
A little bit about the journey we’re on as a company: Concept3D was founded in 2006 and got its start in the 3D mapping business. In our early days, we were doing tons of models for a product we probably all know but is no longer front and center—Google Earth.
By 2016, ten years later, we had 100 higher ed partners and were powering 100 maps. Skidmore College was our 100th map in 2016, and to this day that map is still alive and well. It's a wonderful map, and we’re proud to have them as our 100th customer.
Around 2018, we began to show something that’s still a core part of who we are—our ability to innovate. A couple of customers said, "Hey, it’d be really cool if we could take these images that are part of our map and turn them into a photo-first experience—a virtual tour." So we flipped everything on its head and brought out our second product, the virtual tour, and began to iterate with our customers beyond maps.
Then in 2022, we brought our third product into the fold through acquisition. We had the privilege of integrating with Localist for quite some time, and as a result of partnering with them, we took the marriage a step further and acquired the business. It was a perfect match. We both viewed higher ed through a similar lens and believed in creating the best product on the market. That became our third product and a big part of who we are today.
Last but not least is our continued innovation. We've launched two new products in the last year or so. We brought our Flipped product to solve challenges in admissions. And again, partnering very closely with our higher ed customers, we launched our Rooms product just a few days ago. That integrates tightly with our Events platform and allows an events customer to manage their rooms through the Room Reservations platform—and vice versa. They're tightly coupled but two separate products.
If there’s one theme throughout this whole presentation, it’s that we love to partner with those in higher ed. We love solving problems on behalf of our customers.
What makes us different? I’ve foreshadowed some of it—but our relentless commitment to innovation really sets us apart. We're constantly investing in our products and listening to feedback from the market and our partners. As higher ed evolves, so do we. Our solutions are purpose-built for colleges and universities.
Many of our employees come from other edtech companies or have experience in education. We’re also really committed to accessibility. We understand the unique requirements of making a campus accessible across platforms. In 2025, reaching WCAG 2.1 compliance is critical, and it’s something we’re dedicating a lot of resources to this year.
We also have deep knowledge of higher ed—understanding what it takes to support students, drive student success, and the unique dynamics around college campuses, from community college through grad school, and across public and private institutions.
Now, a little about why we’re here today: the Connected Campus Summit. We recently hosted an insights panel and got a lot of feedback from customers. An event like this was wanted, and it’s a perfect opportunity to take advantage of our virtual work environment to create high-value content without needing to fly across the country.
So, we created a ton of relevant content that’ll be presented throughout this week—from the convenience of your desk. Whether you’re grabbing lunch, having coffee, or listening to recordings—it’s super convenient. And every topic came organically from you. While we listen and respond with our products, we also listen and respond more broadly—and that’s why we’re here this week.
Let me share what education and higher ed means to me. I truly believe it’s one of the greatest pieces of our society. I was a first-gen student, getting my undergrad a long time ago. I was a Pell Grant recipient—financial aid was essential for me. At the time, I probably didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have, but today I really value the importance of education.
It opens up career opportunities and gives people a future. I later earned an MBA as well.
Now, I’m also a proud parent. I just returned from Clemson University, where my son is a junior. My wife and I attended their ring ceremony—an intimate tradition as students transition from junior to senior. It was really meaningful.
As parents, we’re very satisfied watching our son grow from high schooler to someone thinking about what’s next—whether it’s the workforce or grad school. I even had a great conversation with one of his friends about her sales internship and all the opportunities ahead of her. It’s amazing how much education has evolved.
Last but not least—I’m also a businessman. And the grads you produce are the fuel for today’s entrepreneurship and capitalism. Higher ed is 2% of the U.S. GDP. It’s a huge part of the economy—and a massive value proposition.
It’s one of the greatest investments you can make for yourself, your child, or someone you love. It’s stood the test of time. I’m proud to be part of this industry and thankful for all that you do.
So—what’s happening this week? Everything ties back to creating a connected campus—strengthening ties whether digital or in-person, and elevating the student experience.
We’ve got six sessions, every day at noon Eastern, with a bonus at 1:30 on Friday. Monday kicks off with a networking session in small groups to talk about the state of higher ed—high tides, low tides, and what’s on your mind.
Tuesday we’ll dive into salary data and career strategy—based on insights our team has gathered.
Wednesday is all about leadership—five stories where leadership really mattered on campus.
Thursday focuses on accessibility—with experts discussing how to make campuses more accessible, especially through tech. One of our product managers will join that session.
Friday has two sessions: one on using digital tools to foster in-person connections, and the final session on student conversations, admissions personalization, and the role of AI.
Each session is at noon Eastern. If you’re on the East Coast, join us for lunch; on the West Coast, grab your coffee and tune in. Don’t forget the Friday afternoon bonus session at 1:30.
Join as many sessions as you can—but no pressure to attend them all. Recordings will be available for everything except Monday’s kickoff networking session.
Stay in touch with us on LinkedIn at Concept3D—we’ll be sharing updates throughout the week. And if you want to post or share photos, we’d love that!
Thanks again for joining us. I hope it’s a great week—and that your campuses feel more connected than ever.
